Among my numerous visits to the barbecue restaurants of the Dayton area, one particularly eluded my gaze, despite the fact that it's just north of my backyard. That one, of course, was Hickory River Smokehouse, up in Tipp City. As such, a few weeks ago, Jules and I headed decided to pick up dinner on our way to pick up some replacement parts for a drawer at Menard's. Ultimately, I was pretty thoroughly satisfied. I elected for a two meat platter, featuring their shredded brisket and their sausage, while Jules chose the half-chicken platter. My brisket was tender and delectable, with just the right amount of smoke and toothiness. I've had better sausage out there, but Hickory River's was pretty reasonable. A hit of garlic or paprika would have pushed the flavor up in my eyes, but even as is, the sausage was good. My meal was served with fries which were wonderfully hand-cut and an applesauce that was very obviously homemade. Both get extra points in my book. If I do have any knock against Hickory River, it's their sauce. It has a touch of back-heat that would normally be good, but the sauce doesn't carry enough flavor of its own to counterbalance that heat. Oh, and I could have really used a slab of garlicky Texas toast. Meals were served with a sweet cornbread, which was good on its own, but I really craved something more savory. Overall, I'd be happy to give Hickory River another go. While they're not as close as Oinkadoodlemoo or Company 7, the flavor and the price make it a worthy competitor!

The BBQ pulled pork was just okay, although I may be biased as we stopped here on our way home from a vacation in Nashville...lol. Both of the side dishes I had with my sandwich were good, green beans and scalloped potatoes. Really good service, not crowded. It was our first visit and the woman taking our order was very informative about the selections. She told us about the popular choice (pulled pork) and pointed out the awards they have won.

The ribs here were good. You don't even have to get it with any sauce. Their scalloped potatoes were not that good. And it was the special of the day for side dishes. The scalloped potatoes tasted like there was dish washing soap in it. The cornbread was dry and when you pulled it apart, there was a nasty slime to it, like when you pull apart thick spit. Their mac and cheese was average. The cole slaw tasted like it was old. The beans were average. I would only recommend their ribs. Stick to that and you'll like Hickory River Smokehouse. If you get the sides you will be disappointed. BTW, you order at the counter at this place cafeteria style and take your meal to wherever you want to sit.

Good customer service. I had the brisket mac & cheese and the chilli. Besides the chilli being a Lil hot for my taste buds the food was good. Yes I would recommend this joint.

The barbeque here isn't my preferred style, but it's OK for what it is. The atmosphere is pretty dark and definitely can't escape the fact that it was a Ponderosa Steakhouse in a past life. When I went it was practically empty, but there was a large space and I can imagine it becoming busy on weekends but still having plenty of room. The BBQ was a touch on the dry side (I had the pulled pork sandwich) and had a very tasty sauce added directly on top when I ordered it. The sauce was of the sweet and spicy type and had really solid spice with very good flavour overall. The fries were no different from what I would get at a hospital cafeteria and appeared to be pretty standard GFS frozen fare. The pickles (I care about pickles) were thin, limp, and appeared to be about the quality that would be used at a fast food restaurant. Service was friendly. Overall? The bbq is passable and the sauce is nice... I might go back because it's not terribly far away and everything deserves a second chance

Some of the best BBQ in the city! I love their pulled pork (award winning), their brisket, and their smoked sausage. While the side are not the best (I like their chili and their French fries) they are above any rating on their customer service. Everyone is always friendly and willing to help.

When I want barbeque I don't go for the decor or the atmosphere, I go for beef brisket. However this time I went for pulled pork. First of all this place is super easy to get off of 75. Take the Tipp City exit and you are there in a minute. It is quite plain inside and you do go through a line to get your food. But, I really like the huge pulled pork I had. It was very moist and tender with great flavor. They do put the sauce on for you and I missed having a sauce selection at the table. The sauce was pretty good though. I got the lunch special with two sides and was very full. The slaw was good but vinegar based and the baked beans were good if you are ok with a BBQ base sauce. The staff was friendly and at the table we were asked several times if we needed anything. I will go back and try the brisket and other sides. Oh the iced tea was good and Im picky about tea.

Great value, great food, spotless and friendly quick service. All without the typical need to pay an additional %20 in tip.

Just picked up a "Smokehouse Combo#2" brisket, smoked sausage, 4 ribs and 2 sides. Brisket was OK, kinda dry and crumbly, sausage was also OK, but the ribs were tough and almost inedible with an unpleasant smokiness to them (almost like a high heat quick smoke instead of "low and slow"). I'll probably stop back again for a quick sandwich but definitely not for a full meal.

Not really my style, but some very tasty BBQ. Beans, coleslaw, cafeteria, cobbler are all words you won't hear me raving about. When I go, I usually get two spicy BBQ sandwiches and skip the sides. They actually have beef and pork to serve both allegiances. Their sweet potato fries, dessert, and sweet tea are delicious. All for a low price, I have to applaud them for their diversity. You can't exactly find this anywhere else.

Great barbeque in Dayton. Had the three meat combo of brisket, pork loin, and ham Pork loin was least favorite and it was very good. The brisket and its tenderness was fantastic. The ham was ridiculously good and seemed to dissolve in your mouth, not too salty either. By twelve the place was hopping for lunch and the staff is very attentive bringing to-go boxes which are needed. If you enjoy great barbeque and home made sides , Hickory River is the place around Dayton.

It is rare for me to give 5 stars but I think this is one of THEE best BBQ places in Dayton. You walk in and you are greeted and served right away. They have all the meats ready to cut and serve to you. I usually get the pick two with the pulled pork and the brisket. Then they ask you what kind of BBQ sauce you want. You can pick between regular, hot, and a combination of the both. The hot is not to bad and is very good. The meat is very tender and delicious. There are numerous sides to pick from. I usually pick the cole slaw and mac and cheese. The sides are also very good. If you are in the area and want some good BBQ then this place should be one of your top choices.

Awesome BBQ! The rolls are warm and buttery with plenty of pulled pork and sauce. It doesn't get any better than this place! We go often!

Very good Smoked BBQ. The custom BBQ sauce is a little on the spicy side - even the mild has some kick. The medium and hot are blazing!!! The Sliced Brisket is excellent and the "Pig - Sickles" (Baby back Ribs) are Fantastic as well.

Basically a large BBQ "cafeteria" with very little charm. The food is average, but i did enjoy the ribs and sweet tea.

I thought the brisket was very good. The ribs were OK, but not outstanding. The line was short and we did get our food fairly fast. Not much of a wine selection but then I really did not go for the wine. Staff were pleasant and the place was clean. The Smokehouse resembles an old "Ponderosa" steakhouse inside. It is BBQ just not the best!

I had dinner there the other night. Cafeteria style so it makes for a quick meal. Portions were generous and with the combo platter I had a chance to sample the kielbasa, brisket, and pulled pork. Hickory River is known for their pulled pork and I actually found it to come in third place of my choices. I had a mix of mild and spicy sauce and thought it w pretty good. My wife had the hot BBQ sauce and we both found it a bit overpowering and took away from the meat. The sides were good and I especially liked the cornbread. I would definitely go back!

We have been enjoying Hickory River BBQ since they moved into Tipp City. Great BBQ! I like the sliced brisket and the sliced turkey is fantastic! Great prices! We had them cater my daughters graduation party - AWESOME! Everyone LOVED it! When I travel to Peoria IL, I know I can get the same high quality meal from one of their other stores. A little taste of home...

Stopped by on my way back to Dayton...this is by far the best BBQ food (customer service is another issue) I've had in the Dayton area. For take-out, I ordered the $13.95 3-meat plate with sliced beef brisket, turkey, and sliced pork loin. Sides, I had the coleslaw and mac'n cheese. And, I had the mixed sauces, including a spicy one. ALL the meats were delicious! Tender...cooked just right. The portion sizes were good. The sauces were equally delicious from sweet to spicy...my preference is spicy. The corn bread was on the sweet side and dry...took one bite and decided not to eat it. The cole slaw is a very sweet version; diabetics beware. The mac'n cheese was cooked well not dry, very cheesy. However, side dish portions were ridiculously small! I think there was a whole two tablespoons of each...okay maybe three! Seriously, Hickory River, can't you afford to provide a few more bites to your side dishes?? Customer service was just okay, mediocre at best. This is a cafeteria type restaurant where you walk-in, stand in line, place your order and sit down. (I am NOT a fan of cafeteria restaurants because of the usual low to non-existent customer service.) When I got to the counter to order, the people behind the counter looked at me and said nothing and went about their business. Okaaayyyy? Can I order or what? Then I was asked what I would like by someone who came from the drive thru area. (Yes, there is a drive thru, too.) One person to staff both areas and NO ONE to greet customers?? Not good. Well, she was pleasant enough, The good thing was that as I was saying what I would like, the rest of the staff was listening and getting my order prepared...that's efficiency and less wait time for me. But, Hickory, you NEED to work on your customer service. What does it take to greet customers with a smile and a warm and welcoming attitude? Overall, I highly recommend Hickory River based on their food ONLY. I rated 3-stars. because while having good food is super important, not being able to provide excellent customer service can drive people away no matter how good your food is.

I love this place!! After living in Texas and TN I have become a fan of BBQ.... after moving to Ohio, I was interested to see what BBQ would be like up here. I realize this is a "chain" of TX BBQ style food.... but honestly, it seems more like a local place to me.....everyone is friendly and welcoming. We have been a few times and taken out of town guests and have always left happy (and full). Restaurant is huge and has plenty of tables and TV's (if that's what you are looking for) and a great selection of food. Pulled Pork, Ribs, Brisket, Sausage... even trukey and ham. Try the onion rings and sweet potato fries. They also have homemade desserts & a good selection of beer. If you have never had Shiner --- give it a try, it's a TX favorite. hickoryriver.com

I am no expert on BBQ, but I think the food is great. Really good pulled pork and the baked beans are awesome as well. Very clean place and found the service to be friendly and fast. All this, and the prices are quite inexpensive. More of a cafeteria (use to go to this location as a kid when it was a Ponderosa), but definitely one of my favorite spots in the Dayton area. Highly recommend checking it out.

It is rare that I get excited about a place but I really like the food here. I realize that it is "franchised" BBQ, and the smoke aspect is minimal (the smoke ring on the brisket is only on one side) but still it tastes good. The Ranch Beans and BBQ sauce are excellent. The meats taste good and are tender if not particularly moist and their good sauce covers up the flaws. The prices are not bad, especially the lunch special. Not the best BBQ but pretty good.

Pretty good BBQ, I am a relocated Buckeye that's living in Austin Tx at the moment, I have eaten my share of 'real Texas BBQ', and Hickory River does a pretty good job at it. The brisket good, the pulled pork is top notch and the turkey excellent.. sides? they serve sides at BBQ places?.. heh heh, the beans are ok, the slaw isn't the type I like the best, the waffle fries are... uh.. fried. The sauces are quite good, the mild is tasty, the hot is spicy ( I usually get a mix of them) and are a fine compliment to both. The only glaringly non-Texan thing going on is that they actually use ...plates and silverware! Real Texas BBQ is served on butcher paper, or at best a styrofoam paper plates and plastic silverware. But if you can get over their high-falootin' ways in regards to table service, they are going to give you a pretty fair taste of Texas BBQ in Buckeye county Oh yeah, for the reviewer who observed that it looked like an old Ponderosa Steak House inside.. there's a reason for that... It used to be a Ponderosa Steak House.. good eye!

Hickory River is so typically Texas if you didn't know better you would think you're in Fort Worth. If you like this distinctive food style you will probably like Hickory River. I only get the brisket--standardizing makes things simple and the beef is great--but others have assured me the ribs are quite okay. Hickory River is a chain, but it's a small chain operation with five locations in Illinois and one in Ohio.

Stopped in for lunch today; a brisket sandwich with green beans and a vinegar based slaw were all yummy. Sweet tea completed the lunch special for a wallet friendly price of $7. If you appreciate good BBQ, stop in...it's just off the I75/Rt 571 exit.

Stopped in once and loved it. My family had different selections, that we all sampled. From mild to very hot BBQ. Kinda Pricey for a larger family, but the one time experience was great.

Finally a good BBQ place north of town. I like this place if only because it helps satisfy my BBQ jones without having to spend time in my own kitchen. The brisket is good and that's what I usually order. In fact, most times, I just order a pound of brisket and forget about the sides. But, that's just me. Most people will want the baked beans and slaw. They're both very good.
